Kodi Operating System

First things first, you will need the Kodi operating system. The version that I have is tried and tested on 01 September 2015. At this point it is the current stable version. You can also check out the official site here (please take care to choose the correct one).

Extraction / Archiving Software

As the Kodi file has been archived to save space, this will need to be extracted. The particular file type is .gz (not overly important). I use WinRAR which is a free archiving utility. You can get it from the official site. I have provided WinRAR for a 32 bit PC and 64 bit PC (if unsure, choose 32 bit). Please note that WinRAR will pop up stating that this is a trial version. Simply click ‘ok’ and the program will fully work.

Image Writer Software

Once the Kodi archive has been extracted, it will leave you with an image file. This is the file that needs to be copied onto the micro SD. In order to make it bootable and run correctly, we can use, one of two software applications to do this. We have ImageWriter or UneBootin. Either one will work just fine. If you are unsure, I will be using Imagewriter in the video tutorials.

SD Card Formatter

If you have received a SD card with your Raspberry Pi package, then you may find it has another operating System installed such as NOOBS or anything else. If the SD card has been preinstalled with software and you want to format it, you may have an issue if you are using Windows. Without going into too much detail, as the SD card is designed to be read by a Linux system, the SD card on Windows may show that it only has a small amount of memory available. All we need to do is format the SD with SDFormatter and this will sort that out for us. This will be shown on the video tutorial. You can check out the official site here, or download from Freedawn below (version 4 (latest at point of video)).

NOOBs Installer Utility

NOOBS (New Out Of the Box Software) is an easy operating system install manager for the Raspberry Pi. This utility will give you the option to choose which operating system you would like to install on the Raspberry Pi. You will have the choice of Raspbian, OpenELEC for Raspberry Pi 1 and for the Raspberry Pi 2
