Kodi is an app you have either never heard of, or one that you use religiously on a daily basis. As one of the most flexible and reliable media suites available online today, Kodi can be installed on a number of devices, including your Amazon Fire TV and your Android phones and tablets, not to mention basic Windows, Mac OS, and Linux computers. With the amount of content Kodi can play, both over the internet and by streaming from your local network or storage, it’s obvious that Kodi is one of the best platforms you can choose to use for your media today, like a replacement for the once-active Windows Media Center. Using Kodi, you can access videos, music, podcasts, and more, all directly from the internet. Meanwhile, with mainstream add-ons including options for Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube, you can pretty easily use Kodi to replace the entirety of Fire OS on your platform, instead switching over to streaming content through Kodi. We also, of course, have to address the elephant in the room: Kodi allows users to stream pirated content and TV streams, and while both Kodi and the writers at TechJunkie don’t support the use of a HTPC platform for illegal content, it’s a feature that millions of people use Kodi for all around the world.

With the popularity of Kodi, there’s a good chance that some users will need or want to use subtitles to read through their content. While subtitles are good for viewers with hearing disabilities, it also allows people to watch content on a lower-than-normal volume, to understand languages that aren’t their own, and to help viewers hear what’s being said through thick accents that often can disrupt the viewing experience. Subtitles are a necessary part of entertainment for plenty of viewers, and thankfully, Kodi fully supports downloading and using subtitles with your media playback, and has supported it since Kodi v13 “Gotham.” Still, you’ll have to dive into your settings to enable subtitles, and you’ll need an addon to grab the subtitles from the web. Let’s dive into adding subtitles to your Kodi client.

Enabling Subtitles

Download exodus on kodi 16.1. In order to download and view subtitles in the standard Kodi video playback window, we’ll need to ensure subtitles are enabled on your Kodi device and, if they aren’t, add them back into the software. Kodi requires subtitles first be enabled before adding them into your platform, so as to ensure users aren’t confused when their downloaded subtitle packs don’t show up when using the service.

Start by opening up Kodi on your platform of choice, be it your PC, Android device, Fire Stick, or any of the other multitude of platforms that are supported by the Kodi developers. Using your remote, cursor, or arrow keys, select the Settings icon in the upper-left portion of the display to open the Configurations menu. Select the very first option, “Player Settings,” to open the list of preferences for your Kodi player. On the left side of the menu, you’ll see a list of options for changing the options for Videos, Music, Discs, and so on; scroll down this list until you reach “Language Settings,” which is where we’ll find the options for subtitle settings.

In the menu, find the Subtitles subheading—it’s second down on the list—and make sure it’s set to “Original Stream’s Language.” Alternately, if you’re looking to watch content in a different language, you can set this option to support a single option. Also in this settings menu, you’ll note that there are some options to change how subtitles appear inside of Kodi, including an option to change the font preference. By default, this option is set to Arial, a pretty standard sans serif font, but you can also adjust it to teletext if you have difficulty reading Arial. Once you’ve adjusted this setting, scroll down to the Download Services options to edit how the subtitle packages download to your device. Make sure that your subtitle language preferences are set to the language(s) you want to view, be it English or any other option. English is the default selection, but you can add more packages if you wish. Finally, make sure you’ve set the proper download location for your subtitle packages, wherever you wish to have it save next to the video stream download (by default) or elsewhere on your platform. Once this is all set, you can back out of settings and head back to the main Kodi menu.

Adding a Subtitles Client

Now that we’ve configured the subtitles settings for your platform, we’ll have to download an addon for Kodi to make sure that you can properly use subtitles on your device. Kodi is built around being open and accessible to all sorts of apps and addons for your device; it’s the main reason most users have chosen Kodi as their favorite media streaming service. Kodi allows users to add both approved and third-party add-ons to their Kodi instance by using app repositories, but as far as subtitles go, we won’t have to add an outside repo in order to utilize subtitles. Kodi comes complete with a large list of approved and default apps you can add to your Kodi platform from the addon browser, and subtitles even have their own category. Let’s dive in.

Start by opening up the addon browser from the main display of Kodi by clicking on the Add-ons menu on the left side of the screen. This will open up a list of every addon enabled on your device, but will also give you a shortcut to the addon browser, which we need to add subtitles to your device. Click or tap on the open-box icon in the upper-left portion of the display to open the Add-On browser in Kodi, which will give you five options on how to add new apps to your client. We need to use the repositories already available in Kodi, so select the third option, “Install from Repository.” Open this menu, then select Subtitles from the list. It’s sorted in alphabetical order, so you’ll find the option for subtitle add-ons near the bottom of the menu.

The subtitle category will load a long list of options and selections you can choose to download from, most of them appearing as URLs in their titles. You can download whichever service you want, but we recommend using OpenSubtitles.org. As an open platform for most subtitles, OpenSubtitles.org makes it easy to add subs to any amount of videos, both local and streaming. They track subtitles for both television and movies, so you can grab the subtitle options no matter which type of media you’re watching, making it an easy addition to any list. Click on the option to add OpenSubtitles to your Kodi platform, then click install on the menu option.

Now that we’ve installed OpenSubtitles on your device, open your web browser on your computer and use this link to load OpenSubtitles’ website on your computer. In order to use the platform, you’ll need to register for OpenSubtitles on their website, because the Kodi add-on requires an account. Enter your email, a username, and a password, and click on the CAPTCHA to register your account. If the CAPTCHA doesn’t load, you may have to disable your ad blocker. You’ll have to check your email for the link to finish registering your account; if the email doesn’t appear in your inbox, you may need to resend the email by using the link provided by OpenSubtitles. Once you have the account registered, return to Kodi and press on the “Configure” icon on this display. If the icon for Configure is grayed out, just back out of the menu and re-enter the OpenSubtitles page. In the configure menu, you’ll see the entries for your username and password; input them and select OK. Once OpenSubtitles has been added to Kodi, you’ll be returned to the previous menu, where you can then return back to the home menu of Kodi.

Enabling OpenSubtitles

Once you’ve added OpenSubtitles to Kodi, the only thing left to do is to ensure that OpenSubtitles is enabled and running properly on your platform. Though you’ve installed the addon with Kodi, it may not work properly until you’ve actually dived back into settings and ensured the app is enabled and ready to work with any of the video services you’ve added into Kodi. To do this, we’ll have to dive back into the Settings menu to take another look at our subtitle preferences.

Start by clicking or tapping on the Settings gear icon again to open your preferences, and re-select Player Settings. Select Language settings from the left-side menu again, and scroll down to the Download Services setting one more time. You’ll see that Kodi’s settings have been refreshed with some new options, and these are what we have to change. Previously, your instance of Kodi didn’t have any options to set default subtitle options, because you hadn’t added an option for your subtitles into the platform. Now that OpenSubtitles.org is installed inside of Kodi, you can actually set and change your default subtitle download settings.

There are four main settings we’ll need to look to change inside of Kodi. These settings will allow your Kodi device to properly show subtitles depending on your own personal preference for loading them into your video feeds.

Subtitle
  • Pause when searching for subtitles: This setting is enabled by default, and allows your Kodi player to pause playback of your video when searching the web for subtitles once enabled. This means you won’t miss any of the show or movie you’re viewing without first having the subtitles on your screen, but it does mean that you may have to wait for a moment after selecting your content before viewing it. If you don’t want this enabled, you can disable it by toggling the setting off.
  • Auto download first subtitle: This setting, disabled by default, allows you to automatically download the first listing on OpenSubtitles without having to first select it. This option actually works well for a large portion of mainstream content, since it brilliantly predicts which option you want to use for your content, but you’ll still have to opt-in by enabling the toggle if you wish auto-download subtitles.
  • Default TV show service and Default movie service: These last two settings are the most important on this list to modify, as these settings are the ones that allow your device to properly support subtitles when viewing content. These settings don’t appear until after you have an option to choose from, and it allows you to select your default subtitle provider when viewing back content. For both of these, you’ll want to click on them and enable using OpenSubtitles.org, or any other subtitle services you wish to use. When you first add a subtitle service, this will be set to None, so make sure to change it before backing out of this menu.

Once you’ve set these as you see fit, you can back out to the Kodi main menu.

Now that you’ve setup your subtitles to work through OpenSubtitles, you’ll find that any video you play inside of Kodi will now have an option to automatically search for subtitles using the service. In the video feed, a subtitle icon will be in the player UI that allows you to select OpenSubtitles from your settings. From there, you can automatically load the suggested listings, or you can manually search for matching subtitles. From there, they’ll automatically be played through the UI, and you can finally use subtitles naturally within Kodi. OpenSubtitles isn’t the only reliable subtitles service on the market today, but it is one of our favorites, and with its free registration, it’s easy to add to your computer, tablet, or television to play back content.
