A video is at the bottom of the page for a visual walk through and install if needed.
Kodi 17.6 Krypton is the newest versions of the ever evolving Kodi media center and is now available to install.
It can be installed to an Android TV box as a upgrade or first time install.
Many android TV box users will no doubt like to upgrade to the newest version.
Minimum Android TV box Requirements for Kodi 17.6 Krypton
The Kodi support team does not give exact hardware requirements since it is constantly being updated.
Here is a quote from the wiki supported hardware page.
“It is very hard to generalize Kodi hardware requirements for Linux-based operating-system distributions on ARM or MIPS based embedded systems”
Personally I would not run Kodi 17.6 on anything with 1GB of RAM or any older ARM processors such as the S802.
A unit with 2GB of RAM and a newer S905 or S912 box should have no problems with Kodi 17.6.
The biggest change to requirements is the need for Android 5.0 Lollipop as a minimum, with no more support for older versions.
Be sure your box has Android 5.0 or higher before attempting to install Kodi 17.6
The android version of a box can be found in Settings–>About page.
Things to Watch Before Upgrading a Kodi Android TV Box.
There are many Kodi boxes available with different Firmware and hardware. With the many units available some boxes may have a firmware setting that blocks an install.
Most units will not have a problem upgrading as long as the hardware and software can support it.
… Does it have a hard / soft reset?
Most boxes will have some type of factory default setting.
While most do some do not, but this is a good thing to know just in-case something was to go wrong with an install.
… Upgrading from an Older Kodi Versions
The Kodi support page recommends only updating from 16 Jarvis, and older installs to update to Jarvis first.
Doing a clean install is also possible but all settings will be erased.
… Android 5.0 Lollipop or Higher
Be sure to have at least Android 5.0 Lollipop or Kodi 17.6 will not install.
How To Install Upgrade Kodi 17.6 Krypton to an Android TV Box
In the screenshots and examples below I am using a T95Z Pro android TV box running Kodi 16.1 Jarvis.
The T95Z Pro has a S912 CPU, 2GB of RAM, and 16 GB internal ROM which will upgrade and run Kodi 17.6 easily.
Method 1: Play Store
The first thing to do is to download the Kodi 17.6 APK ARM file.
It can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or from the Kodi site.
It is much easier to use the Play Store since it is automatic but the Kodi Download page can also be used.
Open Google Play Store and type in Kodi or Click Here for Kodi Google Play Store Link
If a version is already installed it may need to be uninstalled first. Very old versions will have an Update button.
Clicking Install or Update will automatically Install the new Kodi 17.6.
Method 2: Manual Download
Manually downloading Kodi from the main site is also easy by opening a Browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or any built in Browser.
Go to the main Kodi download page by Googling it or clicking here for the Kodi Main Download Page.
Scroll down and click were it says Android.
The ARM file to download will depend on your box with 32 bit, and 64 bit options.
Most all boxes will use the ARMV7A (32BIT) version.
If in doubt simply download and try both, as the wrong file will not install and give an error at some point.
The ARM file can also be copied to a Flash drive or SD-Card with a computer and taken to the box.
After it downloads open File Browser inside Apps.
It will be located in the Download Folder.
Clicking the file will begin the installation.
If you are upgrading from an older version the settings usually keep such as add-ons but there is no guarantee.
Kodi support page recommends upgrading only from previous version Kodi 16 Jarvis. If you have a much older Kodi 14 or 15 version, a upgrade to Jarvis may be necessary to keep all the settings.
Of course a clean install can always he done by deleting the old install and simply installing Kodi 17.6.
A clean install will need add-ons setup again but can often be the best method in some scenarios.
After it installs Kodi 17.6 will be ready to run.
If the add-ons get erased, read here for the top Kodi add-ons and how to install them.
Possible Errors and Problems
The possibility for problems during a install can always happen and may be unique to your box or to all android systems.
Here are some errors I ran into while installing Kodi Krypton on a few different boxes.
If the wrong file is downloaded and is tried to install it will give an error “Kodi Not Installed”. This is usually because the system can only run the 32bit or 64bit file.
It will not harm anything to run the wrong file and will simply give an error part way through the install, If this happens use the other ARM file.
Another common error is “There is a Problem Parsing This Package”.
This is a generic error that can be caused by a few things. The main thing is be sure that Install from Unknown Sources is set to ON.
Unknown Sources will be located under Security in Settings.
Some boxes like to give a Parsing Error if the Developer options are set to off.
A MXV box did this and to enable the Developer Options I had to go to the About Page and click the “Build Number” 7 times. Kodi then loaded fine.
Summary
With the new Kodi Krypton now available many will no doubt like to upgrade with most having no problems.
While upgrading is nice keep in mind there is always the potential for something to go wrong.
If you are a technical person you likely will be able to work through most any problem that arises.
If you are not technical and have a older version of Kodi installed, it may be a good idea to wait as long as the current version is working.

If you are using an older Kodi version (latest as on date is 18.3 Leia) on your Fire TV / Stick, this guide is for you. I will show you how to update Kodi on FireStick or Fire TV without using a computer. The process is quite simple, however, you need to follow the steps carefully as mentioned in the guide so that you do not encounter errors at a later stage.
If you are a new user and haven’t installed Kodi yet, let me tell you it is one of the best Amazon Fire Stick apps that you can install on your device. Follow this guide to learn how to install Kodi on FireStick.
With the method covered in this article, you will learn how to update Kodi on Fire TV without losing any existing Add-ons or Builds. We will use the ES File Explorer app to update the Kodi app. ES file explorer is a free app and is easily available via the Amazon App Store. You can download and install it using the FireStick search option. If you have downloader app on your FireStick, you can use that too.
Note: If you are facing buffering problems on your Kodi, there are chances that it will be fixed with the new update. However, you can also check out our guide on Kodi buffering issues.
In this guide, I will use Amazon FireStick with Alexa voice Remote to show the update steps. Before you proceed for updating Kodi on your Fire TV / Stick, read the important instructions below.
Important #1 If you want to upgrade your Kodi version from Jarvis to Krypton or Krypton to Leia, you might want to consider a clean install instead of an update. Several users have reported that they are encountering issues after updating Kodi 16.X to Kodi 17.X. Obviously, an upgrade from Jarvis to Krypton or Krypton to Leia is a major one and some files might not be installed properly in the update process. In this case, I would suggest you follow the below steps.
Important #2 If you are upgrading any version of Kodi 17 Krypton to Kodi 17.6 Krypton, or Kodi 18.1/18.2 to Kodi 18.3, the update guide will work fine for you. For example, you can update Kodi 17.4 to Kodi 17.6 Krypton on your Fire TV without facing any errors. Also, you will not lose any data such as Add-ons/Builds or Skins that you are currently using.
Important #3 If you are upgrading from Kodi 16 / 17 to Kodi 18.3 Leia, I strongly suggest switching your skin to default Kodi skin that is “Estuary.” If the skin you are currently using doesn’t support Kodi 17, you will see only a Black Screen and will have no fixes except a complete reinstall of Kodi app.
To switch to default Kodi skin, go to Settings > Interface Settings > Skin. Here you will see all your Kodi skins. Simply switch to Estuary. You can also select “Confluence” or “Estouchy” as they also support Kodi 17.6 and 18.3.
